Launched in early 2024 by David Berg, CommanderAI plans to be the “Salesforce for waste management”, delivering an AI-powered CRM and sales prospecting platform designed specifically for waste haulers, dumpster rental services, and industrial recyclers.


The Genesis of CommanderAI

David Berg’s career in the waste business began unconventionally. As the first employee and garbage truck driver for Ohio-based Battle Motors, he drove across the country, gaining firsthand experience of the industry’s challenges.

One obvious problem stood out: while sales prospecting tools and solutions have been gaining ground in other sectors, the waste management industry continued to operate offline, relying on traditional methods such as door-to-door sales visits and paper records.

With this gap in mind, Berg conceived a solution that combines technological advancements with the specific needs of the waste management sector.


Customized Solutions for a Niche Market

While platforms like Salesforce and HubSpot serve as general CRM systems, Berg identified a critical limitation: these products aren’t tailored to the nuances of waste management.

CommanderAI addresses this by offering a system that:

  • Recognizes long sales cycles and unique contract environments in the waste management industry.
  • Uses artificial intelligence to identify potential clients from public data, even those without a web presence.
  • Segments the market for effective, targeted outreach.

“Our vision is for 30% of the waste industry to be using CommanderAI as their lead-gen and sales tool, connecting them to those who need a tonnage service,” added Berg, underscoring the company’s ambition to revolutionize sales processes in the waste market.

CommanderAI’s platform is built to serve businesses of all sizes, from small haulers with a single truck to large regional operators. Key features include:

  • Artificial Intelligence Prospecting: Automatically finds potential customers, reducing time spent on manual research.
  • Personalized Outreach: AI helps create tailored messages for leads to improve engagement and conversions.
  • Actionable Intelligence: Sales teams receive bite-sized, actionable insights, allowing them to focus on high-quality leads.

Gaining Traction in the Industry

CommanderAI, founded within the waste hauling sector, has drawn interest from related industries. The platform has been particularly popular among medical and hazardous waste management organizations, which face complex regulations and need to target specific customers efficiently.

To accelerate growth, CommanderAI raised a $5 million seed round, led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with participation from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. The funds will be used to:

  • Expand the sales organization
  • Enhance the platform with new capabilities such as mapping, marketing automation, and route optimization

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, CommanderAI aims to expand beyond waste management into adjacent verticals. However, the immediate focus remains on transforming sales within the waste industry.

“We hope we see 30% of waste management using CommanderAI as a lead source for AI tooling, and really any kind of tooling in their tech stack,” Berg stated.

As the waste and recycling industry evolves, CommanderAI is positioning itself at the forefront, developing products that combine domain expertise with the latest technology to increase sales efficiency and operational improvements.
