OpenAI and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are introducing a huge effort to educate 400,000 teachers in the U.S. about artificial intelligence (AI).

Now, together, they are launching the National AI Education Academy, a five-year initiative designed to assist educators throughout the United States in incorporating the tools of AI in their classrooms. OpenAI is investing more than $10 million over the next 8 years to help this collaboration ($8 million in direct funding, $2 million in technical support).
The aim at the outset is to give teachers — especially those in underserved school districts — the skills and resources required to incorporate AI into their own teaching practices.
The effort is supported by a number of partners, including Microsoft, Anthropic, and the United Federation of Teachers. The first training center is in the process of being developed in New York City, and it has plans to open additional centers by 2030.
The program will include professional development workshops, online classes, and practical training for teachers. They will also have priority access to OpenAI tools, technical support, and resources to build their own AI-fueled classroom apps.
