Just days after the release of Perplexity’s Comet, OpenAI is expected to be releasing a web browser powered by artificial intelligence in an effort to compete with Google Chrome, according to a Wednesday report from Reuters.
The founder of ChatGPT claims he plans to release this browser in the coming weeks. The OpenAI browser, like Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Arc browser (formerly called Dia), is likely to use AI to reconceive how people browse the web.
It is thought the browser will handle some of the user interactions in ChatGPT itself instead of sending them to websites. OpenAI’s browser could feature its web-browsing AI agent “Operator”, according to Reuters.
OpenAI has planned to work to create its own browser since early 2024, according to The Information. OpenAI presumably wants direct access to user data and the ability to dream up new types of user experiences much like Perplexity does, also free from intermediation by Google.
